Intentional deviation from Ghostty 1.3.1 (DEVIANT_FIXES.md row 31).
Zig's apprt/gtk/ipc/new_window.zig:49-53 builds the D-Bus argument
array from raw bytes as a *trusted* GVariant; an argument with invalid
UTF-8 or an interior NUL violates GVariant's string invariants, which
GLib turns into a process abort. The Rust port mirrored this with an
explicit abort().
new_window now validates every argument before touching the bus: a bad
argument prints an error to stderr and returns Error::IpcFailed, so the
CLI exits with failure and nothing crashes. Valid arguments are sent
byte-identically to Ghostty.
Test Plan:
- cargo test -p ghostty-apprt-gtk new_window
(invalid_dbus_strings_are_rejected_without_abort)
Zig parses config values (cli/args.zig, Config.zig field parsers,
config/string.zig) from raw byte slices, and each field type decides
whether it requires UTF-8 (InvalidValue otherwise) or stores bytes. The
port escape-encoded raw bytes into Strings at the line reader and let
fields parse the escaped text, so fields could observe encoding
artifacts; successive audits kept finding such leaks (RV5-RV8).
Field parsers now receive the original bytes: text fields validate UTF-8
where Zig does, byte/path fields store bytes (EncodedOs/OsString). This
resolves all 9 RV8 findings (docs/rewrite/notes/review-rv8-codex.md),
each with a regression test: Windows path conversion fails with
BadPathName instead of substituting U+FFFD; Windows process launch uses
strict UTF-8 like Zig's Command; the WTF-8 decoder accepts paired-
surrogate encodings like Zig; literal U+FDD0 Unicode key triggers;
selection-word-chars and clipboard-codepoint-map reject invalid UTF-8;
font style / codepoint-map family names use original bytes; C title
actions forward bytes; D-Bus new-window/Flatpak conversions match Zig.
Design, sweep and validation: docs/rewrite/notes/final-bytes-refactor.md.
Also moves the bundled iTerm2-Color-Schemes license out of
resources/themes/ so +list-themes no longer lists it as a theme
(output is now byte-identical to Ghostty 1.3.1).
Done by Codex (gpt-6-astra), reviewed and verified by the orchestrator.
Test Plan:
- cargo test --workspace --no-fail-fast (3428 passed, exit 0)
- just check-macos (both), just check-windows, just check-wasm
- +show-config --default --docs, +list-keybinds, +list-actions --docs,
+list-themes --plain compared with /usr/bin/ghostty
Ports ZIG/src/apprt/gtk into ghostty-apprt-gtk: every GObject class
(application, window, tab, split tree, surface + scrolled window,
child-exited banner, search/key-state/resize overlays, command palette,
global shortcuts, all dialogs, config wrapper) as glib subclasses with
the same GType names, properties, signals and template children; GDK
key translation; X11 and Wayland window-protocol helpers (blur, CSD,
quick terminal via gtk4-layer-shell); single-instance D-Bus IPC;
gsettings; cgroup scope creation.
build.rs compiles Ghostty's blueprints with blueprint-compiler and
bundles UI, CSS and icons into a gresource, as Ghostty's build does.
The core is not ported yet, so the crate defines the boundary it needs
in src/core.rs (CoreApp, CoreSurface, RtApp, RtSurface, Waker); the
spec is in docs/rewrite/notes/ghostty-apprt-gtk.md. ghostty-core will
implement these traits (the crate no longer depends on core to avoid a
cycle). examples/demo.rs runs the app with a dummy core that clears the
GLArea; it launches on Wayland without GTK criticals.
Stubs/open items: toggle_visibility, float_window, secure_input and
close_all_windows return false; inspector is a no-op; X11/Wayland
protocol code is untested against real compositors; gtk4-rs doesn't
expose the GLArea framebuffer id, so the renderer must query it.
Also registers ghostty-apprt and ghostty-cli in workspace.dependencies.
Test Plan:
- cargo test -p ghostty-apprt-gtk (36 tests)
- DEMO_QUIT_AFTER_MS=3000 cargo run -p ghostty-apprt-gtk --example demo
